Stress Management – Don’t Let Stress Ruin Your Health

Ever wondered what would your body and mind go through in those moments when you get on your nerves? Let’s not talk about the extreme conditions, these moments of disgust happens in our day to day life. Unpleasant traffic, long commutes to offices; work pressure with deadlines, arrogant/disobedient children and the list goes on and on. Life for many has become a wrecking rat race. I need not tell you that this is definitely taking a toll on your health.

There are too many activities happening in your body without your knowledge in conditions of stress. Two main hormones which are instrumental in such situations are adrenaline and cortisol. They are the ones which are responsible for something called as “the fight or flight response”.

  1. Adrenaline

Adrenaline which is produced from the adrenal glands is responsible for helping body survive grave and immediate emergencies. It increases the heart rate, increases the blood pressure, dilates the pupils, increases the blood supply to the muscles, expands the air passage in the lungs etc. Basically, it helps in either fighting an emergency situation or fleeing an emergency situation. But if these conditions of adrenaline rush, happens too frequently or in other words, if we have to deal with a lot of stressful situations very often, then it may impact our health very badly in a longer run. Some important adverse effects of this can be, continued anxiety, sleeplessness, appetite changes, hypertension, weight loss and so on. Repeated over-secretion of adrenaline in our day to day stressful lives might put us into pills which might continue to a lifetime and I’m quiet sure no one would love to have pills for decades right?

2. Cortisol

On the other hand, frequently called as a steroid hormone is “cortisol”. This is again hormone which helps in metabolic functions and deals with stress. More of this hormone is released in conditions of stress; the more there will be effects on a long run like, impaired libido, disturbances in the periods/menstruation, abnormal weight gain and the list goes on.

So the point to ponder here in total is, HOW DO WE DEAL THIS/ HOW TO KEEP STRESS AT BAY? Let’s see what Ayurveda has to say about this?

1. Avoid tamasika ahara– To have a balanced mind and a healthy body, we need to watch what we eat. Ayurveda advises to avoid tamasika ahara/ the food which increases the tamo guna in the mind. Some examples being, stale food, frequent intake of meat, alcohol, processed food which is stored for a longer time etc etc … If we have only satvika food which is rich in nutrition and is devoid of stale elements, our emotions would be better under control and we would have a stable peaceful mind under any circumstance.

2. Following of sadhvritta– Ayurveda has given a lot of importance to the following of a set of life rules called as sadhvritta… It includes various points like, speaking the truth, respecting elders, treating people inferior to us with respect, must always be honest and truthful to our words, must avoid the company of people who are anti-government, atheist and who are anti-social, must follow the basic entities of dharma-artha-kaama-moksha which are popularly called as the chturvidha purusharthas, one must never cheat on his/her life partner and the list goes on .. we can definitely have an exclusive article based on sadhvrittas. So if we analyse these sadhvrittas carefully we get to know how to have peace of mind and live in harmony with the society. In short, we can avoid stressful situations by following these sadhvrittas.

3. Yoga and meditation– Many of us are very familiar with the concept of meditation with the kind of popularity it has. But is it right to only meditate without knowing the basics of yoga and related entities ? Yoga is as popularly projected , not only about following asanas. It has ashtangas ( i.e. nothing but 8 steps or stages of attaining happiness in life). Ashtangas start with Yama and niyama. This is nothing but ways to avoid stress and have a peaceful mind with good self control. May be we can detail about it in another article.

So, let’s not try to make stress a way of life…. We can exist peacefully even when we move towards success with these simple yet effective techniques told above
