[AKHYANA008]: A story of ayurveda by Shreya Pastey

IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING, IT WOULD BE NOT ARGUING WITH MY MOTHER BACK IN OCTOBER .

EXACTLY TWO YEARS AGO,TO BE PRECISE IT WAS 2017 OCTOBER.
I WAS ARGUING WITH MY MOTHER ABOUT HOW I WAS LEAST INTERESTED IN BECOMING A DOCTOR AS MEDICINE WAS NOT MY CAREER GOAL.
I TOLD MY MOTHER I WOULD JOIN ANY COURSE BUT NOT MEDICINE, AS I NEVER IMAGINED MYSELF WEARING APRON AND STETHOSCOPE AROUND MY NECK.

MY JOURNEY IN AYURVEDA STARTED BY CHANCE. I JOINED BAMS COURSE BECAUSE OF MY MOTHER’S WISH I CAN SAY.
I STILL REMEMBER THE FIRST DAY OF MY DEGREE, THOSE UNKNOWN FACES, COLORFUL PEOPLE AROUND ME, IN A TOTAL CONFUSED STATE OF MIND I ENTERED CLASSROOM.
ONE OF OUR LECTURERS ASKED US “WHY AYURVEDA IS BETTER?” .
TO BE HONEST,I HAD NO IDEA WHAT AYURVEDA IS ABOUT.
WITH ALL THE CONFIDENCE I HAD IN ME, I RAISED MY TINY LITTLE HAND AND SAID “AYURVEDA IS BETTER BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS” AS A LAYMAN.
THE LECTURER WITH A WIDE SMILE SAID
“YES, IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS IF TAKEN IN A PROPER DOSAGE ACCORDING TO DISEASE CONDITION.”

OVERALL I KNEW I HAD NO OPTION THAN ACCEPTING WHERE I AM,UNDERSTANDING THE ANCIENT SCIENCE WAS MY GOAL .

MY DAY STARTED WITH CHANTING
“NAMAMI DHANWANTHARI AADI DEVAM, SURASURA VANDIT PAADA PADMAM,
LOKE JARA RUGBHAY MRITYU NAASHAM…”

I WAS FAMILIAR WITH HINDI,NO DOUBT BUT
I WAS SURPRISED WHEN I GOT TO KNOW THAT WE HAD TO RECITE THE SHLOKAS DAILY.
IT WAS ALL NEW TO ME. AS DAYS PASSED BY,WE ALL HAD SIMILAR QUESTION IN OUR MINDS.
*WHERE EXACTLY WE WERE?
*AM I GOING TO BECOME A DOCTOR OR A PHILOSOPHER?
*IS THIS A MEDICAL FIELD?
OH GOD!!

AS WE WERE LUCKY,ALL THE LECTURERS WERE SUPPORTIVE FROM DAY 1.
SANSKRIT WIDE OPENED ITS ARMS AND WELCOMED US WITH ITS GRAMMAR AND SHLOKAS ABOUT WHICH WE WERE UNAWARE.
RECITING THE SHLOKAS WAS A BIG TASK FOR ME AS I WAS BIT LAZY.

I USED TO THINK WHY UNIVERSITY DOES NOT GIVE US A DOUBLE DEGREE AS WE HAD BOTH SHARIRA RACHANA AS WELL AS ANATOMY.
THIS IS HOW MY JOURNEY LOOKED FROM THE DAY I JOINED TILL 6 MONTHS IN AYURVEDA.

WITH ALL THE STRUGGLES FROM UNDERSTANDING THE TRIDOSHA TO GETTING TO KNOW ABOUT ATMA, I LEARNED LIFE SKILLS. WE HAD TO BELIEVE SOMETHING WHICH WE CANNOT EVEN SEE AND PROVE IT’S EXISTENCE.
IN THE AMIDST OF ALL STRUGGLES, I MANAGED TO ACCEPT AYURVEDA SLOWLY. THAT IS WHEN I STARTED TO BELIEVE THAT I HAD ATMA AND MANAS IN ME WITHOUT WHICH I WAS ABHAV PADARTH OR A NON EXISTING THING.

YES, I HAD TO PUT MORE EFFORTS IN MANAGING BOTH AYURVEDA AND MODERN BUT TRUST ME IT WAS FUN TO BALANCE BOTH THE SCIENCES EQUALLY.
ONCE YOU START TO UNDERSTAND THE THINGS FROM A CORRECT PERSPECTIVE, EVERYTHING STARTS TO FALL IN PLACE.
ONE INTERESTING THING I HEARD IN CLASS WAS HOW ACHARYA SUSHRUTA MANAGED TO SUTURE WITH THE HELP OF BLACK ANTS.

THE SECOND YEAR WAS WAY MORE INTERESTING WITH THE SUBJECT LIKE DRAVYA GUNA. I SHOWED A GREAT ENTHUSIASM IN LEARNING THE DRUGS AND WANDERING AROUND THE HERBAL GARDEN, KNOWING THAT BASED ON THE SIMILAR SHAPE TO BODY ORGANS A DRUG HAS IT’S EFFECT ON THAT PARTICULAR ORGAN.
STARTED TO EAT CHYAVANPRASH TO CLEANSE AND HEAL MY BODY, MY INTEREST FOR AYURVEDA GREW MUCH HIGHER.

AFTER TWO YEARS WHAT HIT US STRONG, BUT A GRADUAL REALIZATION WAS HOW DEEP AYURVEDA IS.

TAKING AN EXAMPLE OF PITTA DOSHA, WHICH ENCOMPASSES ALL THE FUNCTIONS LIKE METABOLISM, COMPLEXION, DIGESTION,TO GASTRIC JUICES,TO HORMONES AND WHAT NOT.

THERE WERE MANY FORKS ON THE ROAD, BUT I KNEW IT WOULD CHANGE THE WAY I LIVE.
I STARTED CHANGING MY DAILY ROUTINE, FOOD HABITS AS WELL AS MY SLEEP PATTERN BECAUSE I HAD UNDERSTOOD HOW CRUCIAL IT WAS TO MAINTAIN THE HEALTH.

I NOW KNEW THAT IT IS A GREAT SCIENCE TO STUDY WITH THE HELP OF BEAUTIFUL LANGUAGE “DEVANAGARI LIPI”
I FELT COMFORT IN LEANING AYURVEDA, IT STARTED GIVING ME WARMTH.
HEALTH IS “PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AS WELL AS SPIRITUAL WELLBEING OF A PERSON”
AYURVEDA NOT ONLY FOCUSES ON BODY BUT ALSO ON MIND AND SOUL.

TODAY WE ARE SEEING HOW FASCINATED PEOPLE ARE WITH THE WORD YOGA.
YOGA BEING A SMALL PART OF AYURVEDA NOW CELEBRATED AS INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY ON JUNE 20TH,BY WHICH WE CAN IMAGINE THE VASTNESS OF OUR SCIENCE.

WHEN SIMPLE LIFE-CHANGING TECHNIQUES INSPIRE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WORLDWIDE, OUR ANCIENT VEDA CAN DO “WONDERS”.

SUCH INSTANCES MADE ME CRAVE FOR AYURVEDA.

“IT IS THE KNOWLEDGE THAT ALLOWS YOU NOT ONLY TO HEAL BUT TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFE.”
