Rheumatoid Arthritis – With an Ayurveda lens…

Rheumatoid Arthritis – this is a well known inflammatory condition of the joints, most known for its severe pain, it’s effect on day to day activities and also most importantly, it’s fast progression towards disabilities and deformities…. But, there is a good news too … Ayurveda has been successful in limiting this condition to a great extent. Let us get a small insight on what Ayurveda has to say about it…

1. What can cause Rheumatoid Arthritis??? There are various reasons mentioned in Ayurveda for this condition. Most of the Ayurveda fraternity consider this disease as Amavata in Ayurveda and treat accordingly. Whether it is named the same or different, doesnt matter. What matters is, the exact cause and how to break that chain of pathology. Some of the reasons for this problem, are – a) Having food which are not compatible with each other…. b) Involving in heavy physical activities soon after having a heavy meal eg- exercising, having sexual intercourse, swimming etc soon after a heavy meal etc.. c) Complete lack of activities (nischalatva) which might effect digestion.

2. What happens ??? Due to some of the above reasons, digestion gets slow. This leads to the build up of metabolic toxins called “Aama” in the gut… This is what is the reason for almost all varieties of diseases as per Ayurveda. These toxins when carried to the joints by vata and when all doshas are eventually involved, can be a reason for this painful condition…..

3. What are the symptoms? There can pain, too much stiffness in the joints, for long duration…. The joints are mostly smaller joints of hands, which are mostly same type of joints in both hands which is called as “symmetrical joints”, technically. Along with this, there is swelling, redness in the joints too. Symptoms related to whole body includes, fever, loss of appetite etc… This condition generally increases in cold weather.

4. What to be done? ***The first and foremost thing to be done is, to seek Ayurveda medical attention. If you ignore it or try doing self diagnosis and medication, it can be DANGEROUS, as this condition is fast progressing and can lead to deformities if ignored and maintained only with pain killers etc…. ****The second thing to be done is, please stop the behavior of erratic eating, cluster eating etc.. .. ****Keep your food light or if possible do light fasting. ****Can use, ginger in the diet either with food or in the form of decoction. ****Avoid too much of oily food and heavy food like cheese, meat, sweets etc…. ****Most importantly avoid day sleep after lunch. ****Stay warm and keep away from refrigerated food and cold food stuffs.

But it is very important to remember that, self diagnosis and trying to rely on Google doctor is highly dangerous, whatever the condition it is.

Stay tuned !!! Happy time !!!!
