Obesity – a real lifestyle problem of the century… What you need to know…

All of us would be quiet aware of the health challenges which are encountered very frequently since the past few decades… They are nothing but lifestyle related diseases…. They are most popularly also called as lifestyle disorders. To name a few, hypertension, high cholesterol levels, cardiac diseases, diabetes mellitus, obesity etc… Infections and most of the communicable diseases have been effectively managed with the advances in all streams of medicines, none the less, lifestyle diseases still remain a problem… So, let’s discuss what causes obesity and what Ayurveda has to say about it…

1. Causes of obesity – Obesity has been discussed extensively in Ayurveda texts… some causes mentioned are, over eating or eating even after the stomach is full and eating frequently which adds on to calories. On the other hand, having too much of sweet taste, fat rich food and having too much of food which are heavy in nature may also cause obesity. Very interestingly, day sleep can cause one to gain weight…. Avyayama or lack of exercise obviously as we all know causes obesity in long run… Some other factors which very delicately has been told to cause obesity in Ayurveda is achintanaat i.e. not having too much of worries…. Last but not the least, very strong factor which leads to hefty body is the beeja swabhava which means genetic predisposition…..

Contemporary science also almost tels the same number of reasons for obesity like over eating and physical inactivity. Along with them some other secondary causes may be certain medications, underlying diseases like thyroid dysfunction, PCOS, etc…

2. What happens in obesity – Ayurveda gives a very clear explanation of how obesity happens and what causes the complications which accompanies the disease…. Here, medas or the fat tissue is formed in abundance, but this fat tissue isn’t a very healthy form of it… In Ayurveda one theory believes that, the essence of food what is taken forms one tissue after the other… In obesity, the other dhatus which are to be formed and nourished after the fat tissues (like the asthi, majja and shukra) is barely formed and suffer less nutrition, due to which their job is not done. This leads to fat body and several complications…

On the other hand, vata which has got very erratic in Sthoulya/obesity, further fans the digestive fire (just like small amount of blowing air can increase the flame). This further increases the problem because, people tend to feel very hungry often due to this and hence end up eating more, adding to the already existing problem of obesity…. So, somewhere as we can see, it becomes a viscious circle… Making it all the more difficult to treat the condition…

3. Some common clinical features of obesity as per Ayurveda – excessive thirst, excessive sweating even with slight activity, body odour, excessive hunger, reduced libido and inability to perform the sexual act, snoring, shortness of breath, infertility, are some of the problems which are commonly encountered by people who are obese…

In the following write ups, let’s talk about the complications, treatment modalities etc..

Stay tuned !!! Happy time !!!
