Obesity and Its Related Long Term Health Complications

Obesity is one such disease which comes with a package of complications and related problems… Ayurveda specifically mentions eight varieties of complications faced by obese people… Let’s see what are they and why they happen …

1. Ayu-hraasa – which means reduction in the lifespan… This is mainly because, in medoroga i.e obesity, as discussed in the previous article, succeeding dhatus from fat tissue isn’t optimally formed…. Once the tissues aren’t formed well, it automatically means that the ojas is not formed well.. hence, decrease in the lifespan may be the result…

2. Javoparodha – this is nothing but restricted movements or inability to do too much of exercises…. This can be because of the guru guna (quality of heaviness associated with the fat tissues) and also because of difficulty in breathing on slight exercise…

3. Kricchra vyavayata – this is the inability to perform sexual act… This can be due to the avarana or encircling of the channel related to shukra…. Here shukra need not be taken as the actual semen, but as the sex related hormones, androgens etc…

4. Dourbalya – there will be impaired metabolism when the dhatus/tissues aren’t formed well…. This can be a reason for debility which can result in inability to perform regular activities…

5 and 6. Swedavabhada and dourgandya – sweda or sweat is the upadhatu of the medas/fat tissue… Due to this, when fat tissue increases in quantity, sweat is more and due to that, increase is body odour is an obvious condition …

7. Pipaasa atiyoga – i.e. increase in thirst… This can be caused as a result of increased Agni due to avarana by medas…

8. Kshut atiyoga – i.e… increase in hunger… This is also associated with the increase in Agni, because of avarana by medas…

These are specifically eight complications of Sthoulya as per the Ayurveda classics and has some very serious effects of being stout… In the next write up, let’s read about the most effective do’s and dont’s for every obese person ..

Stay tuned !!! Happy time !!!
