Physical and Mental Disorder and their Interrelation

An analysis of physical and mental disorders as per Ayurveda …

Ayurveda has been a guiding light for optimum way of living since times immemorial…. The science has been described as “anaadi” i.e. it doesn’t have a definite origin… Ayurveda can’t be called only as a medical science but it is a science of life in fact of all lives… Now what makes it special is its holistic, spiritual and complete approach to all aspects of life…

In this write up, let us know what Ayurveda exactly thinks about the physical and mental disorders i.e. somatic and psychic disorders and their inter-relations…

1. What are shareerika rogas – those diseases which are affecting the body i.e. at the physical level are called as shareerika rogas.. like for example, many of the diseases which generally effects us like fever, gut issues, ENT related conditions etc … Here, the main victim is the physical body.

2. What are manasika rogas – these set of conditions are indicative of mental health issues… Some exams can be anxiety, depression etc …. Here, the main victim is the psychic component..

3. Both physical and mental health issues have their own group of culprits, responsible for their manifestation… Nevertheless it is important to note that both these set of health concerns are most of the time inter-related … Meaning to say, that most somatic diseases and most psychic diseases are all either caused due to one another or coexist as part of the pathology ….

4. It has been almost certainly proven that  most diseases are indeed psychosomatic.. A mental illness can have a physical manifestation and vice versa…. Eg – depression can lead to over-eating and thereby resulting into various physical conditions like obesity …

On the contrary if a person suffers from chronic conditions or progressive conditions like many forms of arthritis, disability causing illness like paralysis etc can make a patient suffer emotionally as well leading to mental issues…

5. What causes shareerika and manasika rogas – physical ailments are mostly caused by the tridoshas i.e. vata, pitta and kapha and texts quote that there can be no disease without the involvement of the doshas… on the other hand, the two manasika doshas are rajas and tamas which are held responsible for mental illnesses…

6. Can there be a relation between shareerika doshas and manasika doshas mentioned above ??? Definitely yes… Both set of doshas are closely related… Vata is more related to rajas, pitta is more related to satva and rajas, and kapha to tamas…

In any scenario, physical doshas can be vitiated first, later leading to vitiated rajas and tamas, causing mental illnesses….

There are specific set of nidanas or causative factors for vitiation of both set of doshas, which ayurveda has clearly mentioned with its preventive and curative aspects….

What we read and analyse today from Ayurveda texts is just the tip of the ice berg… There is indeed more to understand and comprehend…

Stay tuned !!!! Happy time !!!
